The Webster Bank Arena hosts major concerts and sporting events throughout the year in Bridgeport. The venue can fit up to 10,000 people at a time. The Bridgeport Sound Tigers minor league ice hockey team plays games at the arena. Fairfield University’s basketball team also plays games here.
Bridgeport, CT, is on land that was once held by the Paugussett tribe. The first English settlement in the area occurred in 1644. The town would be incorporated in 1821 and was named for the nearby bridge that went over the Pequonnock River. Multiple iron foundries were established in Bridgeport after the Civil War. P.T. Barnum also made Bridgeport the winter home for his circus. The city grew in the early twentieth century thanks to the arrival of tens of thousands of immigrants from Ireland, Germany, and Italy among other countries, but deindustrialization later in the century led to a decline.

The St. Vincent’s Medical Center and the Bridgeport Hospital are the two largest employers in the city. The Bridgeport Hospital operates as an affiliate of the Yale School of Medicine.
