Taunton, Massachusetts, is a southern suburb of Boston in Bristol County. The city was formed in 1637 and is one of the oldest cities in the country.

Multiple churches in Taunton date back to the nineteenth century. The First Parish Church has been operating in the same site since 1830, although the Unitarian Universalist church has been running in some form since 1637. The Congregration Agudath Achim is also in Taunton and is one of the oldest Jewish synagogues in the commonwealth.

The Old Colony Historical Society operates out of Taunton in the Church Green area. The Society is home to a museum dedicated to the history of the region. A genealogy research center is also on site.

There are more than a hundred structures in Taunton listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Bristol County Superior Courthouse is the most popular of the sites. The late-nineteenth century courthouse features a series of bright domes and is currently a nesting spot for peregrine falcons.

The Silver City Galleria is a prominent commercial site in Taunton. The mall features nearly a hundred retail stores.

Taunton, Massachusetts, was settled by the English in 1637 and incorporated in 1639. The city’s name comes from the village of the same name in Somerset. Many the settlers originally came from the area. The region grew as a silversmithing community and would eventually be incorporated as a city in 1864. The U.S. Army Camp Myles Standish operated in Taunton during the Second World War as a departure site for soldiers heading to Europe. The camp was also a prisoner of war camp that took in German and Italian soldiers for questioning.

Taunton is approximately 40 miles south of Boston. The city links to Boston through the Fall River Expressway. Taunton is also 20 miles east of Providence and is connected to the Rhode Island capital by Winthrop Street or US Highway 44.

Taunton is the third-largest city in Massachusetts based on land mass. Taunton is about 48 square miles in size. Less than five percent of the land is occupied by water. The Taunton and Mill Rivers take up much of the water. Lake Sabbatia appears to the north, while the Assawompset Pond is to the southeast.

Taunton has a population of about 55,000. Nearly a third of the city’s population is connected to Portugal by birth or ancestry.
