The city of Auburn was inspired by a poem called “The Deserted Village” written by Oliver Goldsmith. Taken from a line in the poem, the city’s official nickname is the “loveliest village on the plains.” Auburn is located in Lee County, Alabama and is considered the largest city on the eastern side of the state. According to the United States Census, the population was estimated to be 65,738 in 2018. When you factor in the Auburn Opelika metro area and municipal state area, along with the Columbus Auburn Opelika metro area, the population was measured to be 501,649. The city was built under the foundation of the college town, which much of the city’s economy centered on the popular Auburn University. The city can be reached when driving through Interstate 85 and Highway 280 and 29. It is situated in the western part of Lee County and surrounded by Chambers County, Macon County, and Opelika. Alongside is the Fall Line, which shows the foothill of the Appalachian Mountains in Chewacla State Park.
Despite its distinct geography and famous parks, Auburn is home to many notable attractions and popular locations. One such place which sees thousands of visitors and residents alike is the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art. The Tuskegee National Forest and Chewacla State Park draw the avid adventurers while Kiesel Park and Pebble Hill draw the history buff. Many residents are avid supporters of Auburn University’s college football team, and rally around their games every year in support. The large crowds contribute to much of the city’s economy and watch the games at the popular Jordan Hare Stadium. Like many places in Alabama, Auburn is filled with a lot of history and continues to see population and economic growth year after year.
