Montgomery, the capital city of Alabama is also the county seat of Montgomery County. The city is named after the Richard Montgomery. Standing beside the Alabama River Montgomery is on the coastal Plain of the Gulf of Mexico. According to the 2010 United States Census, the city of Montgomery had a population that measured a total of 205,764.This Alabama city is the second most populous city in all of Alabama Beaten only by the city of Birmingham.
It is also the 118th most populous in the United States. The metro area as you may suspect is even bigger. The Montgomery Metropolitan measured in population a total of 374,536 according tot eh 2010 census. Despite the massive size of the city, its metropolitan is only the 4th largest in the state. Incorporated in 1819, the city of Montgomery was created by an merging of two towns situated along the Alabama River.
By the year of 1846 it became the state capital, and began representing the shift of power to the south-central area of Alabama. This growth continued with the growth of cotton which was a staple commodity crop of the Black Belt. By February of 1861, the city of Montgomery became the first capital of the Confederate States of America. The city remained capital until the Confederate seat moved to Richmond, Virginia.
This event occurred in May of that year.By the middle of the 20th century, it was a major center for many of the civil rights events known today. These events included the Montgomery Bus Boycott and the Selma to Montgomery marches. Montgomery has a large military presence hosting the Maxwell Air Force Base. Additionally the city is host to public universities Alabama State University, Troy University, and Auburn University at Montgomery.
