Catonsville is a census-designated place (CDP) which is located in the county of Baltimore, Maryland. As of the 2010 census, the population was 41,567. The small suburban community lies just to the west of Baltimore along the city's border. Catonsville contains a majority of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). UMBC is a major public research University and has nearly 14,000 students, it is not a small university to say the least.
Before being settled by European colonists, the area was occupied by the Piscataway tribe. Native Americans had good relations with the original European settlers in the area. Yet wars and diseases caused their population to decline very quickly. Soon the remainder of the tribe’s population gradually dispersed, or what was left of it. In the early 1700s, the European colonists slowly settled in the area, and built roads. The first of these settlements in the present-day Catonsville area was Johnnycake Town, settled in the 1720s.
The strange Johnnycake Town was named after ta type of cornbread which was once sold to travelers at the local tavern.
Though the Town of Johnnycake has since disappeared from maps like the Native Americans of the area, it’s main roads, Johnnycake Road, Old Frederick Road, and Rolling Road exist even to today. Rolling Road was long ago used to transport tobacco from plantations south to the Patapsco River upon the olden day horse-drawn wagons. In the year of 1787, the Ellicott family built a road, called the Frederick Turnpike.
This road was used to transport goods from their flour mill, Ellicott Mills, all the way to the Baltimore harbor. The turnpike was built just south of where Johnnycake Town was. Charles Carroll, the very last surviving signer of the Declaration of Independence, had owned land next to the newly built road back in the 1700's.
