Columbia is a city located in Howard County, Maryland, near the coast of Maryland. It is one of several principal cities that make up the Baltimore metropolitan area. This small planned community consists of ten self-contained villages. It began with the idea that a city could enhance its residents' quality of life.
The developer and creator of Columbia, MD was James W. Rouse, he saw the new community in terms of human values, rather than focusing on economics and engineering.
The town was only recently opened in 1967. It was intended to not only eliminate the inconveniences of the past-current subdivision design, Columbia was also created to eliminate racial, religious and class segregation. Consistently ranked on CNN Money's top ten Places to Live in the United States, this little town has a big mark.
The official Columbia consists only of a small territory governed by the Columbia Association, yet larger areas are still included under its territory by the U.S. Postal Service as well as the Census Bureau. These other communities that predate Columbia, include Clarksville, Simpsonville, and Atholton. According to the official US Census numbers established in 20100, the population of all of these Columbia territories had a population of 99,615. Making Columbia is the second most populous community in Maryland just after Baltimore. Recent estimates by the Census Bureau's American Community Survey division put the population a little higher at approximately 103,467 as of 2015.
Founded by Easton, Maryland native James W. Rouse (1914-1996), a native in 1935, Rouse obtained a job in Baltimore with the Federal Housing Administration. This agency was a New Deal agency whose purpose was to promote home ownership and home construction in the Baltimore. In this position, Rouse was exposed to all phases of the housing industry.
