Like all of the major cities of Hampton Roads, Portsmouth is an independent city of the state of Virginia. According to the 2010 census, the population of Portsmouth was 95,535.
Many major military installations are located in Portsmouth, including The Norfolk Naval Shipyard, which is often called the Norfolk Navy Yard. This port is a historic and still active U.S. Navy facility which is actually located in the city of Portsmouth rather than Norfolk. The original name of the naval yard "Gosport" was changed to "Norfolk". This was in order to reflect its location, in what is now the former Norfolk County, Virginia. The naval yard upgrades, remodels, and even repairs the many ships of the US Navy. This yard is one of few facilities around the world that has the capability to dry dock an aircraft carrier.
Directly opposite Norfolk on the Elizabeth River, the city of Portsmouth also has miles of waterfront land.
The city acts as part of the harbor of Hampton Roads. There is a ferry boat that takes riders back and forth across the water between Downtown Norfolk and Olde Towne Portsmouth.
Located on the western side of the Elizabeth river, Portsmouth is located directly across from the City of Norfolk. In the year of 1620, John Wood recognized the future site of Portsmouth as a suitable shipbuilding. John Wood, a shipbuilder, had petitioned King James I of England for a grant of land. Soon thereafter, the surrounding area was settled as a plantation community.
Founded by Colonel William Crawford, a member of the Virginia House of Burgesses, Portsmouth was established as a town in 1752. This was done by an act of the Virginia General Assembly and was named for Portsmouth, England.
In the year of 1767, Andrew Sprowle, another shipbuilder, founded the Gosport Shipyard adjacent to the city of Portsmouth.
