The Suffolk of present day was formed in the year of 1974. This foundation was after consolidating it Nansemond County and the two towns of Holland and Whaleyville.
Founded by English colonists in 1742, Suffolk was founded as a port town along the Nansemond River in the Virginia Colony. The town originally went by the name Constant's Warehouse. This was named for John Constant. Later one Suffolk was renamed after Royal Governor William Gooch's home of Suffolk, which is a county in East Anglia, England.
Long before contact from the Europeans, indigenous American tribes lived in the region for thousands of years. And by the time of English settlement, it was the Nansemond native Americans who lived along the river. As of the early colonial years, the English were cultivating tobacco as a commodity crop. Later the agriculture of Suffolk was turned to mixed farming. And it eventually became the county seat of Nansemond County in 1750.
In it's early years, Suffolk became a land transportation gateway to the areas east of it in South Hampton Roads. And prior to the American Civil War, both the Portsmouth and Roanoke Railroad as well as the Norfolk and Petersburg Railroads were built through Suffolk. These railways were the early predecessors of the railroads currently operated by CSX Transportation and Norfolk Southern.
